Welcome! Education is the most powerful tool which you can use to change the world. -Nelson Mandela In 2021, I began my PhD Journey with hope and optimism. I hoped the learning would challenge me and spur me to become a better thinker. "The world as we know it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking." -Albert Einstein I was optimistic about completing the program. My goal is to finish my dissertation and then find ways to use my knowledge to contribute to society, helping to disrupt colonial thinking, challenge white supremacy, and dismantle systems of discrimination and oppression. How can I use this degree to lead change? Obtaining a doctorate has always been a lifetime goal that seemed more aspirational than inspirational, until I discovered Niagara. The clear vision of the process, the pace of the program, and the work made the impossible attainable and relevant to my goals. The kindness and generosity of the professors accentuated this, enabling me to believe that I could not only dream it but also achieve it. Presentations & Publications The wise person doesn't ask, "What have I achieved?" but rather, "What have I contributed?" - Marianne Williamson Over the last few years, I have focused on improving teaching and leadership in district schools to improve outcomes and achievement for students in Ontario. Toward that end, I have dedicated my efforts to providing key reading, mentorship, and presentations that support teachers in their transition from teaching to leading. I consistently and affectionately support leaders in their transition from good to great. In Service to Others A new goal for me is to engage more fully in scholarship. I would like to write another book and produce more articles for educators and leaders. Intentional Spelling Unlock Your Potential Mission Being on the Board of Directors for Food4KidsWR is a passion project. I was asked to speak in May 2024 at their annual Breakfast Gala, and it was an absolute pleasure. Food4KidsWR provides food bags on weekends to about 1200 students in the Waterloo Region. Students who receive food bags from Food4Kids benefit from nutrition and the acts of kindness and generosity that foster hope, optimism, and a sense of belonging. Rise Up! The Parent Involvement Committee for the WRDSB organized a wonderful event for caregivers and the wider community to address the issue of how to raise anti-racist upstanders. It is no longer acceptable for individuals to standby and feel ok in the presence of racism, prejudice, descrimination and other behaviours rooted in hate. We have to take a stand and raise our children to do the same. The Rise Up event featured Anthony Lee a Titan and Motivational Speaker. Anthony shared his amazing story about the rise of his basketball career and his passion for learning. The keynote was led by Selam Debs an incredible public speaker, activist and educator. Women Take Charge As much as I enjoying being the presenter, I look forward to being in the audience and learning from others. The Cambridge Chamber of Commerce hosted a breakfast series that engaged a number of prominent business women in a series to give back to other women through conversational presentations. The Women Take Charge learning series brought a variety of speakers to the stage. These femal leaders had all overcome challenges to find their a seat at the leardership table. Each speaker brought their unique perspective to the topic of women and leadership. A key take away for me has been the benefits that women bring to organizations. They help increase productivity, enhance collaboration, inspire organizational dedication, and improve fairness. That sounds like we need more women in charge!
